چکیده

Land surface deformation can be caused by underground mining activities. The maximum subsidence normally occurs directly above the location of the excavation of the coal seam. In the case where the longwall mining technique is applied, the magnitude and shape of the subsidence bowl are constrained by the longwall structure (pillar). This paper describes the use of satellite radar interferometry for monitoring surface subsidence due to underground mining, as a cost-effective geodetic technique and complementary to conventional ground surveying techniques. This paper uses data acquired by the current generation of SAR satellites the European ENVISAT and the Japanese ALOS to monitor ground subsidence in the southern highland coal field in NSW, Australia. An accumulated DInSAR subsidence mine map is produced using 6 successive ALOS acquisitions. The results are postanalysed with the aid of geographic information systems (GIS) and validated using ground survey data.

Application of Repeat-pass DInSAR and GIS for Underground Mine Subsidence Monitoring

This research used both ERS and JERS-1 images to investigate the feasibility of differential radar interferometry (DInSAR) for mine subsidence monitoring in the state of New South Wales, Australia. DInSAR results are analysed and validated with the aid of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. The drawbacks of using interferometric measurements for mine subsidence monitoring are discussed. ...

Satellite radar interferometry for mine subsidence monitoring

Australia is one of the world’s leading mineral resource extraction and exporting nations. Underground mining can cause ground surface displacement, which may in turn have serious impacts on the environment or man-built facilities. This paper describes the results of a study into the feasibility of surface subsidence (caused by underground coal mining) monitoring using differential interferomet...

Monitoring Longwall Mine Subsidence and Far-field Displacements Using Multi-wavelength Radar Interferometry

This study uses the spaceborne radar interferometry technique to monitor ground subsidence and far-field displacement due to underground longwall mining in the Southern Coalfields of New South Wales, Australia. The radar images acquired by the European ENVISAT/ASAR and the Japanese ALOS/PALSAR sensors were used to compute the terrain deformation. ASAR and PALSAR sensors use microwave signals in...

Radar Interferometry for Mining Subsidence Monitoring

Coal mining activities all over the world often introduce serious environmental impact to the local regions, such as the occurrence of land subsidence. Conventional subsidence monitoring is done by precision leveling and GPS surveying. However, recent studies show that differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) is capable of monitoring land subsidence at sub-cm accuracy. In ...

Differential Radar Interferometry for Mine Subsidence Monitoring

The history of mining disasters includes cases of subsidence and collapse into workings, and also a number of inrushes into underground mines, where deficiencies in surveying, or in maintenance and interpretation of plans, were prime factors. The most recent incident in Australia was at the Gretley Colliery in NSW, in 1996. The most recent such incident in the USA was at the Quecreek Mine in So...
